Letters from a Former Student and His Students

I received lovely letters from 36 children.

I have been organizing short-term study abroad programs for Japanese and American universities for several years through my business, Akari Translations. While all have been lovely groups of young aspiring students, I fondly remember a particular group that came to Maui for about a week in 2016.

It was a rather small group, and 6 out of 7 students were majoring in early childhood education, studying to be school teachers. As I was also a schoolteacher, I shared the same passion, and I arranged a preschool visit for them. They read children’s books to the preschoolers and played with them.

In 2017, I visited their university in Japan, and I got to see them again. Then I kept in touch with them over social media.

In 2019, they graduated, and one of them contacted me in 2021. Yuto Adachi has become a second-grade teacher at his local public elementary school. The news made me happy, but I was tickled even more when I heard that he had become a second-grade teacher since I has also taught second-grade at a public school here on Maui.

Mr. Adachi’s second graders were learning about foreign schools worldwide, so he asked me if I could talk to his students over Zoom about how children on Maui are learning. Besides his class, another second-grade class joined the session, and I got to see many bright and adorable children on the screen. I showed them some photos of Maui and answered their questions.

The children were intrigued by the differences and similarities for each topic, such as recess, what time school starts and ends, textbooks, wearing shoes inside, school lunch, where they eat, and so on. They had many excellent questions.

At the end of 2021, I received letters from Mr. Adachi and his 36 students. What a pleasant surprise that was!

I felt honored to be invited to his class and meet his students whom he is wholeheartedly interacting with every day. Seeing the college students, whom I had the privilege of hosting, moving onward with their lives and dreams fills my heart with happiness.

I wish him (and all the other students I had the honor of interacting with) all the best, and I look forward to hosting future college groups.

At Akari Translations, we provide customized short-term study abroad programs for international groups. We will become a liaison between your university and the targeted university. We will not only create customized short-term study programs but also arrange all the necessary details to make each program a successful and life-changing experience.

Odissi Student Recital 2021

Some of you already know that I dance, perform, and teach a classical Indian dance called Odissi.

I met my dance teacher, Sarala Dandekar, in 2005 here on Maui, and my journey to learn Odissi began.

I had no idea that I would meet a classical Indian dance in Hawaii, but by the grace of the universe, I did, and I fell in love with it.

In 2012, I had my debut ceremony called Manchapravesha. The following year, I flew to India to study with my teacher's teacher, Guru Jhelum Paranjape of Mumbai. At that time, I saw her perform, and something profound touched me, and my inner voice said, "This, this, this is what my soul wants to study."

When I returned to Maui, I seriously contemplated and asked myself what I would do if I had only 2 or 3 more years to live. My answer was, "I’d prioritize dancing Odissi." So, the following year, I left my full-time schoolteacher position. Since then, I've been running my translation and tutoring business to make ends meet. I still get to work with children through tutoring, which I love, and having my own business allows me to have more freedom to dedicate myself to Odissi.

In 2016, I started teaching Odissi with my teachers' blessings. Ever since, I have been grateful to learn Odissi even more through the experience of teaching. Another teacher of mine, Guru Vishnu Tattva Das of San Francisco, who is like a dance brother to my teacher, Sarala, sent me a message one day, "When you teach, you complete the circle and give back to dance. Keep it up." Again, something touched my heart deeply and overwhelmed me with appreciation.

Once a year, I hold a dance recital to stimulate students' growth and give them a platform to share their hard work with their loved ones.

We had to miss one during 2020, and in 2021, it was still tricky to hold an in-person recital, so we decided to do a video recital instead. We shot it in December, and I just finished editing it!

My maternal grandfather was a bamboo weaving artist in Japan. He said, "Art is not necessary to sustain physical lives. During economic hardships, we need to buy food first, and artists may not earn money, but we need to keep creating and honing our skills, especially during such times because art sustains the human spirit." I took his words to heart, and my students and I have continued to show up in person or over Zoom for our weekly classes throughout this pandemic.

I've had the honor of witnessing them shedding tears in class with all sorts of sentiments - from being frustrated with themselves to the feeling of accomplishment. No matter what, they kept showing up.

And there they were - celebrating their milestones. For my beginner students, this was their very first performance. For my pre-intermediate students, this was their first time to perform in full costume.

As it will be the case for even advanced dancers, there are techniques to be polished and room to grow, but their hearts are shining and in the right place. When I watch them dance, my eyes narrow in arches, and I can’t help but smile. I know how hard they've worked, so seeing them dance with such sincerity touches me deeply and humbles me.

Ordering Costumes and Saree

This week happened to be a week to order my students' Odissi costumes and cotton saree for practice.

Two students who have been studying with me for the past 4, 5 years started wishing, "Someday, we'd like to have our costumes." We felt that the time has ripened to get one. It means a lot to have your own dance attire. One is that it means that a dancer has worked hard to the point and that she/he is committing her/himself to further learning.

I asked one of my teachers, Guru Vishnu Tattva Das of San Francisco, where/how I could get costumes (I got mine more than 10 years ago). Within five minutes of inquiry, one of his students, Mansi called me. I had met Mansi at Vishnuji's class in San Francisco before. She said that his students just placed an order, and I could squeeze in my students' order, too. What great timing! That night, I had a class with my students, so it was excellent timing in that sense, too.

Mansi sent me a measurement sheet. I printed it out and helped my students measure 16 different sections of their bodies. Then they picked two colors. Mansi sent us pictures of saree based on their color choice. Then my students chose the saree they liked. Then the order was officially placed.

Mansi has been the point of contact with tailors in Orissa (or written as Odisha) (where Odissi dance originated) in India for many years. She is from Bhubaneswar, Orissa, and speaks their language, Oriya. We were very grateful for her kindness in letting us squeeze in our order. We kept her up late until 1 am California time. (She wanted to place the order that evening to ensure that the tailors begin working on it to meet the shipping date.) Sorry to keep you so late and thank you so much, Mansi! When I apologized, she wrote back, "I am glad I could help other dancers."

My teacher, Sarala Dandekar's, and Vishnuji' have been sister/brother dance schools, so Mansi is like our "cousins." What a lovely dance cousin she is!

Also, this week, I ordered cotton practice saree for my beginner students from a company called Classical Dance Jewelry. They chose the colors they like. It is fun choosing a color. :-) They will begin dancing in saree!

For me, witnessing my students getting Odissi costumes or saree is like watching my precious children/sisters being wedded. It is touching to see.

(Odissi dance is a temple dance, and dancers were considered married to gods a long time ago.) (I am not religious, but I respect all religions in the world, and I do believe in the source beyond, behind, and all around us.)

(Mansi just sent me the photos below. Wow, they're coming together!)
